06/01/2011 Hurricane Season Begins

Today is the official start to the Atlantic hurricane season. The beginning of the eastern Pacific season actually started May 15th. Every year I have always pulled up the lists of the hurricane names for both the Atlantic and eastern Pacific and tried to determine what strength they will be and where they might hit based off of the names alone.  There is nothing scientific about this process. Simply some fun.
Atlantic Names:
Arlene- Weak start to the season. Tropical Storm
Bret- Category 1
Cindy- Thinking of the littlest Brady family member. Category 1.
Don- Hits nowhere. Just slugs along in the Atlantic Ocean. Tropical Storm.
Emily- This name should have been retired. Former Category 5 that devastated parts of  Mexico.
Franklin- I think of the little kids turtle cartoon. Slow and strong. Category 4
Gert- This one will be the first Category 5 of the season, but will only be a cat 2 when it makes landfall in Virgina.
Harvey- This one will hit Cuba. Category 1
Irene- I remember the other Hurricane Irene that hit Florida. Category 2.
Jose- Second and final category 5 for the season.
Katia- This sounds sweet and innocent, but it will end up as a category 4.
Lee- Thinking of the jean company. Category 1
Maria- This will hit Florida, but will only be a tropical storm.
Nate- We wont get this far down the list, but if we did, this would be a Cat 2.
Ophelia- We wont get this far down the list, but if we did, this would be tropical storm.
Philippe- Thinking of Ryan Phillipe. Category 3.
Rina- Category 1...not likely, but maybe.
Sean- We wont get this far down the list, but if we did, this would be tropical storm.
Tammy- I worked with a Tammy and she was the nicest lady ever. Tropical Storm.
Vince- We wont get this far down the list, but if we did, this would be tropical storm.
Whitney- We wont get this far down the list, but if we did, Category 2, just to finish out the list with a bang.
Eastern Pacific Names:
Adrian- Weak start to the season. Tropical storm.
Beatriz- Reminds me of Princess Beatrice from the royal wedding who wore that hideous hat. Disaster. Category 4
Calvin- I used to work with a Calvin. Category 3
Dora- The Explorer.....need I say more? Tropical storm
Eugene- Sounds like a sweet little grandpa. Category 1.
Fernanda- Sounds exotic....but will do damage. Category 2.
Greg- This actually makes me think of Typhoon Greg. It hit Malaysia on Christmas Day. Category 4.
Hilary- This one will hit southern California. Category 1.
Irwin- First category 5 for the eastern Pacific.
Jova- Confused by the name. Tropical Storm.
Kenneth- This is my dads name. This is a no win guess.
Lidia- This will start off strong, but end up at a tropical storm before it makes landfall in Baja California.
Max- Category 4
Norma- Jean?  Category 2
Otis- Thinking of Milo & Otis movie. For anyone who has dogs you know they can be sneaky. Category 3.
Pilar- Category 1.
Ramon- Will be the last storm of the Pacific list. It will go out with a bang. Category 3.
Selma- I know it's not how you spell it, but I'm thinking of Salma Hayek. Tropical storm.
Todd- We wont get this far down the list, but if we did, this would be a Category 2.
Veronica- We wont get this far down the list, but if we did, this would be Category 1
Wiley- We wont get this far down the list, but if we did, this would be tropical storm
Xina- I cant help but want to correct the spelling no this to Xena. Weak. Tropical storm.
York- We wont get this far down the list, but if we did, this would be tropical storm
Zelda- We wont get this far down the list, but if we did, this would be tropical storm
